Gaga for Issey
Dec. 11th, 2009 05:18 amReally loving Issey Miyake right now. Random. I was just looking through my folders for pegs, and saw some of these. Forgot that I saved them. I've always been more a fan of Rei Kawakubo (and to a lesser degree, Yohji Yamamoto) when it comes to the Japanese avant-garde movement of the 80s, to put a label to them, although they don't mean to be clumped together. But now I'm seeing Issey with fresh eyes. It happens.
The thing I love about Issey Miyake is the attention to the 3D aspect of a garment, and marrying that with traditional Japanese cutting methods and shapes. It makes for beautiful relevance. To those of you who don't necessarily follow fashion news, Issey Miyake's not designing anymore; but the label's still operating under Creative Director Dai Fujiwara, who's doing quite a good job. I'm happy to say that the design house still manages to come up with clothes that I look forward to.
A few looks that I'm really in love with, from then and now:

Before I found out this was Issey from the 80s, I really thought it was a recent Comme des Garcons piece. Fail.
Doesn't it remind you of CdG for H&M? Albeit a little more high fashion

What is this brilliance??? I love every single detail!

This is so fashion intern-ish. I'd love to walk in the office wearing this outfit, that's for sure.

That red coat is amazing. I don't think I've encountered that exact silhouette before. And to marry it with flats... love.

That top. Wow.

It almost looks like an optical illusion. Almost christmas tree like, but too genius to make fun of. I would love to have this in my closet. And I'd wear it with black ballet flats too! I super love.

Please, somebody answer this question. Why do the Japanese have such a different stance, a different aesthetic? I always ask myself that, but I can't come up with a sufficient answer. And people wonder why I have a penchant for anything Japanese. (Well, except the "kawaii" shit. The only thing legitimately kawaii in this world and deserving of that annoying adjective is a Japanese boybander named Ohno Satoshi. Yes. I just had to insert him here somewhere)
Yes. Kawaii~. Definitely kawaii. Even if saying that word kills me. I mean, if that doesn't merit cute, I don't know what cute is!
